School Counselor

Counseling

My name is Alison Memoli and it continues to be an honor to serve the amazing children, families, and staff at JFS; I began at JFS in 2009 (and started work in public education in 2001). As your child's school counselor, I believe that children come first! I work together with teachers, families, and the community to help each and every student achieve personal, social, and academic success. I also work closely with the Family Support Liaison to support families.

As a professional school counselor, I am certified with a master's degree in school counseling (South Carolina State University) and a master's degree in social work (University of South Carolina).  In my spare time, I enjoy time with my family, reading and time at the beach!

HOW WILL THE COUNSELOR WORK WITH STUDENTS?

Individually: Counselors work with students individually through play or by talking out an issue or concern. Counseling through play allows the child to say with the toys what he/she may have difficulty saying with words.

Small Groups: Counselors work with small groups of students who are experiencing shared concerns. Groups may deal with topics including conflict resolution, grief counseling, children of divorce, friendship, study skills, self-concept, and decision-making skills.

Classroom-Based Instruction: Counselors visit classrooms to help students build a variety of skills based on state and national standards.

Remember: Counseling services are available to ALL students, not just those in crisis situations. Counseling focuses on prevention, intervention, and/or treatment.

HOW DOES OUR PROGRAM BENEFIT YOU?

Students?

Our program benefits students by constantly encouraging a positive self-concept. It also increases communication skills, decision making skills, classroom performance, and conflict/resolution skills.

Caregivers?

Our program benefits caregivers by improving communication and collaboration between home and school and further involving the caregivers in their student's educational and personal development.

Teachers and Administrators?

Our program encourages positive, supportive working-relationships with other teachers and staff, provides a team effort to address student needs, increases the likelihood of academic success, and overall promotes a positive and healthy school environment.

The Community?

Our program benefits the community by promoting career awareness activities that help students form basic work values and attitudes about work and identify their skills, abilities, achievements, and interests. Our program also encourages students to become good citizens.
